There are some things you can do in advance to help keep yourself safer when the weather is bad. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have good tread. Check your window washer fluid and wiper blades. Replace any lights that are out.
While driving in the rain, slow down. Limit distractions such as talking or loud music. Don't use cruise control, but do turn on your headlights. If you should hydroplane, slow down gradually by taking your foot off of the brake. Steer into the skid gently if you are sliding. Finally, don't drive in standing water because it's easy to underestimate just how deep it might be.
